The Corruption of Divine Providence – Review

I’m a fan of indie film and I like that in recent years I’ve had the opportunity to watch and review Canadian made films that I may not have otherwise heard about. When I was offered The Corruption of Divine Providence I raced to find the trailer and thought Heck yes I’d love to watch a horror movie. So how is it? Below you’ll see my full review though keep in mind that while I try to keep these things spoiler free there will be a few minor spoilery type comments.

The Corruption of Divine Providence, filmed in Manitoba is set in the fictional small town of St. Michel and focuses on the a family of Metis descent, the Seraphin family. Jeanne Seraphin, played by Ali Skovbye, is the central focus of this film as she’s rushed to the hospital, displaying what appears to be Stigmata – the injuries that Jesus Christ suffered during his crucifixion. Jeanne’s affliction draws the attention of the Christians around the world including a TV preacher named Peter Wolf and Jeanne’s father, Loius sees this as an opportunity to offer up exclusive interview rights in an effort to make some quick and easy money.

The Corruption of Divine Providence has plethora of other subplots that just sort of feel crammed in there with no real explanation of why or how. I thought the movie was just alright. The movie just felt like it was trying to do too much and have too many messages to keep straight. Is it a horror? Drama? Supernatural? The answer in short is yes. Had they just kept to the supernatural I think this movie would have come off better. I liked the final payoff. I found that to be incredibly interesting but the rest of the film was just a muddled mess.
