Project Hail Mary (Review)

Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. As his memory returns, he realizes he’s on a desperate mission to help save Earth, and along the way he forms an unexpected bond with an alien companion named Rocky.

The visual effects are beautiful and sharp. Space is scary but full of wonder and they perfectly capture what I imagine it must feel like. The film does a good job making the science-fiction elements feel exciting without losing the emotional core.

What really gives the movie its heart is the relationship between the main character and Rocky. Their connection becomes the emotional center of the whole film, and it’s both funny and genuinely touching in a way that sneaks up on you. It’s the kind of unlikely friendship that makes the story feel bigger than a survival mission — it becomes about trust, loyalty, and connection across an impossible divide.

Overall, it’s the sort of movie that mixes wonder with warmth. It’s smart, entertaining, and surprisingly moving, with a lead performance and central relationship that give it real staying power. I will admit that I wasn’t really sure that I’d like this movie and I did but not nearly as much as The Martian. Still – this was a good film though it’s doubtful that I’ll come back to it again.
