The Invincible (PC Review)

The Invincible was developed by Starward Industries and published by 11-bit Studios.

It’s a loose adaptation of the popular 1964 Polish novel of the same name. When I say loose adaptation, I mean that it’s almost like a complimentary adaptation of the book because as I understand it there are new or different events and characters that don’t necessarily align directly with the book.

The visuals are top notch
Look at this beautiful planet

If you’re new to this channel, know that I hate spoilers and I always try to avoid them so you shouldn’t be too worried. There may be some small minor bits of information but nothing that the trailer doesn’t show you.

The Invincible puts players in control of Yasna who wakes up confused and lacking memory of how she got there on a faraway planet called Regis 3. Soon it becomes clear that something odd is happening on Regis 3 and she must now embark on a search mission for her missing crewmates. I found the game is more a first-person sci-fi thriller than what you would see in an adventure game. While Yasna searches the planet, she’s in continual contact with her shipmate Novick who is safe high above the planet on their spaceship. While talking and completing different goals, the player will be presented with options for how to respond and each response may lead to a different story branch. As I understand it there are multiple endings in this game which should keep you coming back for more. Personally, I’ve managed to see 2 different endings and one of them was very very cool. My first play-through took me approximately 6.5 hours to complete.

You won’t necessarily be all alone either. You will encounter other people and AI and you’ll even have the opportunity to drive a rover. These interactions with other people will help to shape your story.

Yasna also has access to a couple of different items to help her out along the way. A diary will hold all the clues and maps of the land, a scanner for being able to detect anomalies in the ground, binoculars, and a scanner to detect where people are.

When The Invincible was first announced the visuals took me and let me tell you that this game does not disappoint. To put it into one word, stunning. The beautiful backdrops and vistas left me slack-jawed and even now as I sit here writing this, I’m thinking about some of the images I took.

The art design is so good. Everything from the monitors to the sensors and even the structures are inspired by illustrations from the 50s that were imaginings of what the future may look like and it’s perfect in every way.

I played on the PC and for the most part, my system was pushing upwards of 120 frames per second but it would dip periodically and the screen would start stuttering. There were also some glitches with animations and visual bugs here and there but nothing overly jarring and I know that they’re working on ironing those minor issues sorted out.

The audio direction they took was also excellent and with a solid headset, it adds to the tension and feeling of unease. Again there were some minor issues that the devs are aware of and they are looking and fixing things. I have every bit of confidence that they’ll have everything in working order in time for the release.

Now to wrap this review up into a nice little package. I enjoyed the story for The Invincible. It delves into some interesting philosophical concepts and ideas that I had never really thought about. The simple fact that you can play through multiple times and get different outcomes is awesome. I’ve opened up 2 of the endings and while I’m not sure if what I witnessed was the best or correct ending, I’m definitely going to be headed back to Regis 3 to see what I can do differently.

Visually, The Invincible is a stunning masterpiece. The art direction is spot on and the environments are a feast for the eyes.

If you’re looking for a high-octane action title, this game may not be for you but, if like me, you enjoy sci-fi and wouldn’t mind taking a break from what you normally play, I can’t recommend The Invincible enough.

The Invincible is coming to PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG.com XboSeries S/S and PlayStation 5 on November 6th, 2023
