The Equalizer 3 Bluray Review

The Equalizer 3 stars Denzel Washington, and Dakota Fanning and was directed by Antoine Fuqua. Special thanks to Sony Home Entertainment for the generous Bluray disc.

The third and (potentially) final film in the popular action series. In this installment, Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall struggles with his past and learns that his friends are under the control of the local crime bosses. It’s at this point he decides it’s time to step up and become a protector.

It’s been a while since I watched the previous installments in the series and I wish I had the time to review them one more time before diving into this one but timing just didn’t work out for me but from what I recall, the Equalizer 3 starts a little bit on the slower side of things but once the action kicks into high gear, buckle up. The action scenes are violent, fast and entertaining which is exactly what one would expect from the franchise. I don’t understand how Denzel Washington continues to get better with age. These are incredibly physically demanding films and at nearly 70 years old, Washington is still slugging away and looking as slick as he ever did.

Of note is Dakota Fanning’s Emma Collin’s is a nice addition as a DIA agent. It was also pretty cool to see these 2 reunited after Man on Fire. I’ve always liked her work as a young actress and this could well be someone we see again in the future.

I’d be disappointed if this is, in fact the last movie that Denzel does as Robert McCall but I get it. He’s looking and sounding great – might be a good time to cap off the career on top. In my opinion, The Equalizer 3 is one of the best action movies in 2023 and it’s definitely inspired me for a full series re-watch.

The Blu-ray transfer is beautiful; honestly, I expect nothing less from the folks at Sony. The 5.1 surround sound is sharp, beautifully accurate and powerful in my little home theater. The extras included are a bit thin but again, that seems to be the case with most releases these days. We get the usual behind-the-scenes stuff, a music video, and a couple featurettes. Nothing particularly mind-blowing but still enjoyable for anyone who enjoys this sort of thing.

If you haven’t watched The Equalizer series, there’s no better time than the present to catch up. If you are well versed in this world, you likely know what to expect and you’re sure to be delighted with the end product.

The Equalizer 3 is out now on Digital on Demand, DVD, Bluray and 4K Bluray wherever physical media is sold.
